BRIDGEWATER STATE COLLEGE ATHLETICS
Head Coach First-Aid/CPR/ and AED Certification
New 2009 Legislation by the NCAA
At the 2009 NCAA Convention, legislation was passed to mandate that all head coaches be certified in First-Aid/CPR/ and AED as a condition of coaching at any athletically related activity. This legislation goes into effect on August 1st of 2009 which makes it imperative that all fall head coaches begin to think about their certification status now. There will be one session conducted in early May and fall season coaches will be given priority. The following procedures are being put into effect in order to ensure BSC's compliance with this new legislation.
- The Athletic Department has set up on-line training with the American Red Cross (Mass Bay Chapter) which includes a skills test that will be taken here on campus. There will be no cost to the head coach participating in this department-sponsored program. Certification expiration periods are as follows: First-Aid (3 years), CPR and AED (1 year).
- John Pringle, Staff Assistant/Aquatics Director will manage the on-line program, conduct the skills test, and keep records for all head coaches. Records will be recorded and stored on the athletic department "G" drive.
- Sessions will be scheduled at three regular intervals throughout the year. Course work and written testing will be completed on-line at least three days prior to the scheduled skills test date. The time-frame to complete the on-line course work will be two weeks. A two hour skills test will be scheduled at least three days after the conclusion of the two-weeks allowed for the on-line session. The total time commitment for all three certifications for most people will be around seven to eight hours (this includes the two hour skills test).
- Skills testing will be scheduled as a group activity. Every effort will be made to accommodate those who cannot make the group skills test, but no guarantees can be made as to alternative schedules.
- Coaches will be emailed notification of upcoming sessions at least one month in advance of the session start. In the event of remaining openings, all administrative staff will be notified of openings to take advantage of possible opportunities for other athletic and recreation staff members.
- Coaches may elect a different method of certification at their own expense, but copies of the certificates must be sent to John Pringle and recorded prior to coaching in any athletically oriented activity. All certificates, regardless of the provider, must include First-Aid, CPR, and AED (note: some on-line courses do not include AED). Coaches who are not current with all certifications cannot be allowed to coach per NCAA rules.
- Assistant coaches are not required to be certified. However, assistant coaches or other athletic department staff wishing to be certified may do so at their own expense ($36.00 for First-Aid/CPR/AED or $18.00 for CPR/AED only) provided that there is room in a session (10 max per session). Special permission may be granted to assistant coaches or Athletics/Recreation staff to attend this class free of charge. Please see Mike Storey if assistant coaches or staff are interested in this option. **NOTE: Assistant coaches cannot be paid for attendance to this certification.
- Sign ups will be held through our EZ facility program beginning immediately and may be accessed on the athletics website in the "inside athletics" section about one month prior to the start date of the session. The first session will begin on April 27th, 2009 and culminate with the two hour skills session on Thursday, May 14th from 6:00-8:00 PM.
